Learning Hints and Tips

Learning Hints and Tips

We all begin our studies full of enthusiasm, with our final goal clearly in sight. However, we know that once the initial excitement has faded, it is difficult to keep motivated and also very easy to put off studying.

Here are some hints and tips to help you keep focused with your studies:

• Remind yourself why you are studying

• Organization and time management are key, so plan carefully and break your learning into manageable chunks reviewing your progress against your learning plan

• Organise a space where you can study without distractions and allow the time to learn

• Let everyone know when you are going to study so that you do not get disturbed

• Don’t be tempted to put off your studies, it is much more difficult to catch up if you fall behind

• You will meet other students, so find a study buddy, someone on the same track as you so that you can compare notes and provide encouragement

• Complete any pre and post assessments and make sure that you join any virtual sessions that are arranged

• The tutors are aware of your progress so talk to them and ask if you require any clarification. If you have any concerns, let someone know straightaway so that they can help

Learning Styles

Our likes and dislikes are reflected in the way we learn. To find out your learning style, think about how you would answer the following question:

When you choose a holiday, do you:

  • Read the brochures? (visual learning style)
  • Listen to recommendations? (auditory learning style)
  • Imagine the experience? (tactile learning style)
  • There are 3 main types of learning style:

  • Visual Learning - You learn by seeing or observing, such as diagrams, demonstrations, etc.
  • Auditory Learning – You learn by listening to information such as speech, sounds and noises
  • Tactile Learning – You learn by physical experience such as holding, doing, and hands-on experiences
  • We develop learning programmes which take your learning style into account. We incorporate a mix of learning methods to ensure that your learning experience is as relevant to you as possible.

    Your Learning Plan

It is really important to be realistic about how you are going to manage your studies. Creating a learning plan and sticking to it will help you achieve your goals.

    Create a SMART learning plan

Creating a learning plan will help you to achieve your objectives. Setting specific times and dates will help keep you focused.

When creating your learning plan, you should be:

  • Specific – Set yourself short bite-size chunks of learning at any one time
  • Measurable– Do self-tests or ask yourself questions when you have completed your studying
  • Achievable– Be honest with what you can achieve in the time that you have set aside to learn
  • Reward – Treat yourself when you have achieved
