Tom Chisnall had spent most of his life working as a plastic injection mould toolmaker. This was a highly skilled job and Tom worked to create plastic components for used goods such as kettles, computers and car bumpers.
Computers were becoming more important in the manufacturing industry. After many years of manufacturing, Tom had the opportunity to design mould tools on a Computer Aided Draughting (CAD) system which sparked his interest in computers and how they work.
Unfortunately, the toolmaking industry migrated abroad and many toolrooms have now gone out of business. Tom could see this happening and decided to do something about it – he wanted to learn new skills to change his career.
Tom contacted Computeach after seeing adverts in newspapers and on the television. He had always used a computer at home, but had little professional knowledge, other than a basic understanding of CAD. Tom enrolled on a Systems Analysis and Programming course with Computeach over eight years ago and successfully completed his qualifications six years ago. He felt the idea of learning whilst still earning money was the right direction for him.
"If you want to change your career, it can be done, but does take a lot of hard work, determination and sacrifices to get there. I used to work seven days a week, week in, week out and then study also. You also require massive support from your family."
Tom’s advice to new Computeach students is:
"Remain focused on what you want to do, as there is a lot of hard work to complete, in the future...it can be done! Also, ensure family are very supportive, otherwise you may fail."
Tom found a job after completing his course and then became self-employed for over four years. More recently, he registered and was placed with Computeach Careers, who help current and past Computeach students throughout the job search process.
"I have to commend Computeach Careers department for the reason that I have found employment again...many thanks!"
Tom is now working as a PC repair technician.
"Studying with Computeach has made me realise that the way we live has changed. There is no more job security, such as years gone by and we do not have to stay in the first job we choose in life. However, Information Technology training/learning is a constant on-going wheel in motion and it is up to us to invest in the most up-to-date appropriate training. I am glad of the introduction Computeach gave me to Information Technology."
