After nine years as a planning coordinator for a confectionery manufacturer, Susan Lloyd left the factory floor to follow a new career in IT. Susan is a Shropshire mother to twins. To most people, retraining for a new career and looking after two year old twins would seem to spell double trouble. But 34 year old Susan was determined not to let this get in the way of her career dreams. The thought of escaping the boredom of her job was enough to drive her to career success.
"After nine years my job had become very repetitive, Monday to Friday was basically the same routine every week, except with different problems. I'd wanted to study computers at school, but wasn't able to. I ended up in mechanical engineering, which was a varied job but poorly paid."
Susan decided to retrain for a career in computing with a Computeach distance learning course. "I could work from home, which was essential, having two year old twin boys. I was not prepared to give up the time I had with them, so I studied in my lunch break and after they'd gone to bed."
As Susan proves, a change of career is possible regardless of background or personal circumstances. Susan landed a new IT job as Systems Engineer for a Telford-based IT supplier just six months into her IT course and before receiving her qualifications.
Susan feels certain that the Computeach course was instrumental in gaining her the new IT position. "It showed I was committed to a change of career and it gave me the confidence to make such a big move."
The ex-confectionery worker says her new IT career is far more rewarding. "It's much more exciting and I have a more stress-free lifestyle. I now have a basic understanding of the subject, so I will progress quicker."
Susan plans now to complete her Computeach course and continue to achieve her career goals within the IT industry. She has no hesitations in recommending Computeach to anyone considering a change of career. "The tutorial support is excellent. There is always someone to help and they are always obliging."
