Just over 4 years ago Darren Danks was an Electronics Engineer. After 12 years in the electronics industry, he felt there was no creativity left in his profession, and that he wanted to do more with his career and life. Combining his love of computers and creativity, Darren decided upon a CIW course in web design to get the creativity back into his job.
Darren had seen an advert for Computeach in his local newspaper. He came into the Computeach office to speak to a representative and signed up that day. However, he was already aware of Computeach's reputation and their 40 years history and experience.
Once Darren had started his course, he was able to interact both with tutors and students at in-centre training days, which gave him a good environment in which to study and learn. Darren really valued their support, especially of the tutors:
"They bring the human ingredient back into the studying which a book/online material will never replace. If you're struggling on a particular section the tutor can re-phrase it slightly differently which can make it easier to understand. They also give moral support which is invaluable!"
Darren remembered that getting through his course wasn't always easy, and required constant focus. He offers these tips to potential students:
"The courses aren't easy and a lot of hard work, will power and dedication is required to pass. but, saying that, the rewards are worth the work!!! 2-3 years out of your life is nothing compared to how much your life can change for the better. Rewards you're going to enjoy for the rest of your life!"
While approaching the end of his course, Darren began to look for jobs in IT, with the support of his tutors and the Computeach careers department. He spotted an advert in his local newspaper for an IT job at a school. Darren applied and was successful for the post. He mentioned that his employer was really impressed with the course and qualification and that Darren had achieved the course in his own time. He says "I know that if it wasn't for the Computeach course and their support I wouldn't have been able to move into the career I'm in now."
As a result of his Computeach studies, Darren is now doing a job he really enjoys. He is now a Web/Graphic Designer, IT Technician and Photographer at a local school.
"I now work in a nice office, with great friends. I'm respected and valued and it's amazing to work with the kids with all their quirks, curiosity and energy."
