'Vast majority' of population to access broadband within a decade

14:25 14th December 2009

By 2017, 90 per cent of the British population will have access to superfast broadband technology, in a move that could boost the IT industry.

According to the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (Nesta), the government's investment in internet infrastructure within the UK could generate as many as 600,000 new jobs and add £18 billion to annual GDP.

That potential could result in many people currently considering a career change looking at undertaking an IT training course in order to take advantage of the new jobs that may come about.

Explaining how the new job opportunities could be created, Jon Kingsbury, programme director of Nesta's creative economy team, said: "Businesses which rely on niche products and services that were not viable in a local community become feasible when global markets are opened up."

In 2009, 70 per cent of UK households have internet access, but significant investment in the technology will be needed to improve coverage, as many of the areas currently without broadband are remote and difficult to reach.
