Government efforts to deliver high-speed internet services to the UK are proving to be less effective than in other parts of the world, according to a new report.
Figures compiled by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have revealed the UK is currently 21st of 30 countries when listed in order of fastest broadband speeds.
That means the UK is currently lagging behind countries including Greece and Spain, while the OECD also suggested its evidence shows countries with superfast broadband connections are already seeing economic benefits.
However, the research also revealed the UK is doing better when it comes to broadband penetration, being listed 13th in the list.
The figures demonstrate the increased work that is needed to be done in order to bring the UK's IT industry up to scratch with those of other developed countries.
Ministers have announced plans to ensure all UK internet connections are running at two megabits per second by 2012, but critics have claimed that speed is already too slow for some high-content applications being used.
