BT will have its super fast broadband network ready by 2012, several press reports have said.
The firm has reportedly said its £1.5 billion fibre-optic network will offer speeds of up to 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) for some customers, and it will support high-definition video.
"Given the progress we're making, four million homes will have access to fibre by the end of next year," Ian Livingston, BT's chief executive was quoted as saying.
Mr Livingston also said the company, which currently has around 5 million customers, aims to offer 10 million homes access to the fibre network "by the time the [Olympic] Games begin" on the 27 July.
In other news, an expert has suggested that funding superfast broadband technology will help a country to boost its overall economy.
According to Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk, those countries looking to invest in high-speed internet services in order to provide businesses and citizens with the technology they need to thrive will receive big rewards in the future.
