Social networking site users more popular and more engaged, study finds

Businesses keen to have engaged, motivated workers who get on well with one another should consider giving them networking training and encouraging them to get online.

That's the suggestion of the findings of a new study which looked into the commonly-held view that social networking sites such as Facebook actually make people less sociable.

Notably, the team at the Pew Research Centre who carried out this latest study found Facebook users to have a greater number of close friends in the 'real world' than those who are not signed-up to the site.

Furthermore, the investigation also found Facebook users to be more politically and socially-engaged, suggesting managers might be wise to encourage their workers to make use of networking courses and get online.

Commenting on the findings, lead researcher Professor Keith Hampton concluded that "people who use sites like Facebook actually have more close relationships and are more likely to be involved in civic and political activities".

This comes as HR Magazine reports that the Institute of Consulting has launched a new game, called 'Battle for the Boardroom', which is geared towards testing professionals' business acumen.
