Residents in rural Scotland may soon be able to more easily partake in distance learning and IT training projects as a result of a drive to boost broadband availability in the remote regions.
Minister for digital Britain Stephen Timms confirmed that some £200 million will be spent on delivering new broadband networks across the country, helping regions with little or no connectivity to receive fast broadband access.
"Already the market in Scotland is delivering innovative ways of connecting people to these superfast networks," said Mr Timms.
He added that he would like to see more market-led investment supported by government funding so that all parts of the country can enjoy fast internet access.
Interim director of Consumer Focus Scotland Trisha McAuley said the organisation welcomed the minister's visit and noted that the particular needs of Scottish residents can be addressed.
Last month, Mr Timms highlighted plans to improve wireless digital infrastructure in the UK.
