A new initiative will place the north-west of England at the cutting edge of broadband and internet technology, in a move that could create new job opportunities for the IT industry in the region.
The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and Northern Way have announced the launch of NorthernNet, a new project aimed at significantly enhancing access to superfast broadband technology in the north of the country.
A total of £15 million is to be invested in new physical premises as well as the development of superfast broadband infrastructure offering speeds of up to 100 megabits per second, meaning the local economy could be revolutionised by the IT industry.
"Access to this single, high-speed digital network will be a huge boost to creative and digital businesses across the north of England," commented Stephen Timms, minister for Digital Britain.
Former communications minister Lord Carter launched his Digital Britain report earlier this year, which seeks to significantly increase access to high-speed broadband services across the country by 2012.
