Mobile internet 'set to soar'

Mobile internet 'set to soar'

14:25 6th November 2009

Mobile internet services will overtake fixed-line demand by 2011, according to a new industry forecast.

Research carried out by mobileSQUARED has claimed that from 2011 the number of total broadband connections in the UK will be 42.7 million, marginally higher than the predicted 42.5 million fixed-line broadband users.

Chris Marling, editor of independent broadband comparison service Broadband Genie, warned that fixed-line technologies are still "setting the agenda" because issues persist in the quality delivered by mobile internet services.

Such a growth in the mobile internet industry could result in a significant shift within the IT industry's jobs market, as more organisations seek to take advantage of this emerging sector and develop applications for customers and clients.

In the second quarter of 2009, 40 million 3G-capable smartphones were sold in the UK - a growth of 27 per cent on the same period last year - according to figures compiled by research firm Gartner.
