IT industry urged to invest in social media for the long-term

People in IT careers seeking to exploit the potential of social networking as a way to boost brand recognition and increase sale have been urged to take a long-term view of the technology.

According to Jason Falls, a social media consultant and blogger on socialmediaexplorer.com, it is important not to simply look at social media as the current big trend, but recognise that it offers businesses potential to grow their brand over a long period of time, building a loyal customer base as it develops.

Providing advice to businesses on how best to use social networks, Mr Falls said: "Remember that social media done well is about building relationships with online consumers."

Demand for people from within the IT industry who can take advantage of social networking has surged as a growing number of businesses look to boost their profile through making use of the technology.

However, recent research from Econsultancy revealed as many as one third of businesses are not planning to boost spending on social media in 2010.
