Social networks will take the place of email as the leading form of office communication in a fifth of businesses within the next five years, research has shown.
The study by independent research company Gartner found that the spread of social networks and a shift in working styles will see 20 per cent of workers utilising social platforms as their business communications base by 2014.
However, Monica Basso, research vice president at Gartner, said that "a truly collaborative, effective and efficient workplace will not arise until organisations make these capabilities widely available and users become more comfortable with them".
This research will be of interest to those currently on IT courses as it gives an insight into how emerging technology is affecting the way that businesses communicate.
A new survey released by People-OnTheGo reveals that most workers find it very difficult to keep up with the volume of emails they receive and manage their social media.
