A new commercial space project that looks to improve global broadband provision has found financial backing.
O3b Networks has raised £700 million for a string of satellites that will provide super-fast broadband to for Africa and other emerging technology markets.
People considering networking courses may be interested to find out that the satellites will link the traffic of local telecommunication and internet service providers in developing countries to the high-speed global fibre infrastructure.
O3b's satellites will orbit 8,000km above Earth, four times closer than standard geostationary satellites, reducing signal delay and providing access to approximately 70 per cent of the world's population with fibre quality internet access.
John W Dick, chairman of O3b Networks said: "The amount of new funding and the quality of the investors reflects O3b Networks' ability to balance important social goals while maintaining the required private sector returns."
The European Commission recently published new data showing that 29 per cent of broadband lines in Europe during July 2010 were supporting speeds of at least 10Mbps.
