Facebook has announced a new messaging service that will place it in direct competition with some of the industry's leading email providers.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of the social networking site, announced on Monday that it would be expanding its current Messages feature so that users can interact across a number of devices using an @facebook.com account.
The news may be of relevance to those taking computer courses as it suggests the world's largest social network, which has over 500 million members, is ready to go head to head with similar email providers like Google and Hotmail.
In an official blog post, Facebook software engineer Joel Seligstein was quick to point out that despite the apparent similarities with email, Messages will differ significantly.
"There are no subject lines, no cc, no bcc, and you can send a message by hitting the Enter key.
"We modelled it more closely to chat and reduced the number of things you need to do to send a message. We wanted to make this more like a conversation," he added.
Google axed Wave, its attempt at a shared communication platform, in August after it failed to impress users.
