IT industry news: European broadband gathers pace

10:57 29th November 2010

The European Commission (EC) has published new data showing that 29 per cent of broadband lines in Europe during July 2010 were supporting speeds of at least 10Mbps.

This figure is up significantly from the 15 per cent recorded in July 2009.

The commission's data also showed that five per cent of lines had average speeds at or above 30Mbps, but only 0.5 per cent provided at least 100Mbps.

Those thinking of taking networking courses may be interested to discover that the number of broadband lines in Europe rose by eight per cent (nine million lines) between July 2009 and July 2010 and there are now 128 million fixed broadband lines in the EU out of 220 million households.

Neelie Kroes, commission vice president for the Digital Agenda, said: "Fast broadband is digital oxygen, essential for Europe's prosperity and well-being. Take up and available speeds are improving, but we need to do more to reach our very fast broadband targets."

A recent study showed that the small village of Farningham in Kent has the slowest broadband speed in the UK with an average download speed of just 1.3Mbps.
