The latest research on domain names has found the number of new names being registered have continued to increase over the past year, with the global recession apparently having little impact on the online economy.
Figures compiled by UK internet registry Nominet have revealed numbers of country code and generic Top Level Domains increased over the 12 months to reach a total of 187.6 million domain names registered worldwide by November this year.
The results demonstrate the continued vibrancy and resilience within the internet economy, as businesses have continued to use the online community to help beat the downturn.
Phil Kingsland, director of communications at Nominet, said the industry had yet to see any significant impact from the global recession, adding: "The overall register size continues to grow and we haven't seen any indications that that is likely to change."
A recent report from the CBI found that having a '.com' domain is critical for businesses, with the country level domains coming in as the next most important.
