Glasgow firms are to be the first in the UK to test out a new 40 megabit per second (Mbps) broadband being developed by BT, the company has announced.
If the move proves a success with companies the service is likely to be rolled out to other major centres of business across the country over the months and years ahead.
Such a development could deliver a revolution in the UK business world by improving the way in which organisations interact and increasing the potential for the creation of new internet-based businesses to flourish.
This could result in an increased online presence among businesses throughout the UK and the IT industry could benefit as more organisations seek experts to help them take advantage of all that the internet has to offer.
The government has pledged to ensure every internet connection in the country is running at 2Mbps or faster by 2012, but in urban areas companies such as BT and Virgin Media are leading the race to deliver superfast broadband, with speeds of up to 100Mbps thought to be achievable in the next few years.
