Email 'could be surpassed by instant messaging'

11:37 31st August 2011

IT industry professionals are abandoning email for instant messaging applications, new research reveals.

According to a survey of chief information officers conducted by Robert Half Technology, more than half (54 per cent) of respondents believe real-time communications tools used in the workplace such as Microsoft Sharepoint and instant messaging will surpass email in popularity within five years.

Almost four in ten (38 per cent) of chief information officers said they believe email will enjoy the same level of popularity it currently enjoys within the next five years.

John Reed, executive director for Robert Half Technology, pointed out that although email continues to be an indispensable tool that has revolutionised the IT industry, the increased use of real-time technologies will have a number of important implications for the IT industry.

"Employers are looking for the right people to deploy these tools in new ways to increase efficiency," he said.

"IT professionals should consider the importance of keeping current with real-time technologies in order to stay competitive in the job market."

The recent 2011 Technology Trends Survey found that most IT industry professionals see a link between technology adoption and corporate success.
