E-retail 'has proved resilient'

13:40 1st December 2009

Internet retail services have proved resilient to the global recession and the sector is set for a strong Christmas, one expert has claimed.

The suggestion that the e-retail sector has proved to be successful despite the downturn could encourage more people in the IT industry to focus their efforts on developing new ways to expand internet retail services.

According to the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), the e-retail market has managed to survive the economic downturn in relatively good health, while October's postal strikes did not affect business as much as some may have feared.

"Online shopping is proving remarkably resilient through the recession and during the recent Royal Mail strike as well," confirmed David J Smith, director of operations at IMRG.

As a result, the IT industry could be attracted more to developing new ways for the online shopping sector to expand in the future, as demand from retailers grows.

Recent figures published by digital market measuring service comScore revealed Friday November 27th was the second heaviest online spending day to date in the US in 2009.
