Creating demand 'crucial to driving broadband'

13:50 27th November 2009

Driving take-up of superfast broadband in the future will require greater thought into what services are desired by users, it has been suggested.

According to the Communications Consumer Panel, working out what will create demand for the next generation of superfast broadband technology will be crucial to their deployment.

Speaking at a recent seminar, Roger Darlington, member for England at the Communications Consumer Panel, said: "Crucially, once we have these networks in place, what is actually going to drive consumer and business take-up?"

He explained that the communications industry must look at what individuals and organisations would actually want to use these networks for, as well as how to fund them.

The seminar examined the prospects for superfast next-generation broadband in the UK, the drivers for take-up and the options for financing the multi-billion pound deployment.
