Cornwall undergoes 4G broadband trials

10:36 25th August 2011

Cornwall is currently undergoing trials of new cutting edge 4G internet technology that could provide a boost to the IT industry.

The trials, which are focused in areas currently not served by broadband fibre optic cables, will enable homes to receive high-speed broadband by mobile phone networks and satellite dishes, reports the BBC.

If the trials are successful, 4G Long Term Evolution broadband technology could provide a cost-effective way to expand high-speed broadband to areas with slow internet connections or no connections at all.

The 4G technology will allow data download speeds of up to 100 megabits per second while on the move.

Howard Farmer, one of the first to sample 4G internet told the BBC: "My son is going to university in London. I am looking forward to the prospect of having as fast an internet connection as he will have."

As part of the experiment, half of the people in Newquay will have their homes fitted with modified 4G wireless routers.
