City-wide Wi-Fi scheme offers glimpse of the future

15:00 23rd November 2009

The launch of a new Wi-Fi scheme across Swindon has been hailed as a major milestone in the development of internet coverage and could help boost internet access throughout the country.

The scheme will ensure people in the city can stay connected at all times, increasing the ability for remote working and mobile communication.

Such a development could result in more people using the internet and boost demand for new technologies and download speeds.

Meanwhile, it may also result in more people taking IT courses in order to take advantage of the technology and make the most of the seamless availability of internet access throughout Swindon.

"[The scheme] will give the people of Swindon another option to meet their broadband requirements, which can only be a good thing," said Chris Marling, editor of Broadband Genie.

A recent survey showed that 98 per cent of surveyed individuals cited being able to stay connected to their work emails as the most significant factor in desiring Wi-Fi.
