This year could be come to be seen as a watershed in the retail sector thanks to the growing importance of technology, it has been suggested.
People with careers in the IT industry could be in greater demand in the future because retailers are increasingly recognising the potential of using the internet to sell their goods, according to digital market research firm eDigitalResearch.
Chris Russell, director of the organisation, said that "lots of changes" are occurring in the online retail world this year, thanks to the improved technology that is available to consumers looking to shop via the internet.
"This is the first year that smart devices - iPhones and the like - have worked sufficiently well and been in enough hands to perhaps provide a shift in consumer behaviour," he explained.
This could result in a surge in demand for people working in the IT industry as businesses look to develop new technology to capitalise on the trend.
The Interactive Media in Retail Group has predicted the month of December will see online sales reach £5 billion, representing an increase of 14 per cent compared to the same month last year.
