Businesses have been urged to support both IPv4 and IPv6 technologies for the time being, as both are likely to coexist for some time to come.
Providing IT training for staff that will enable them to use both versions may therefore be beneficial.
IPv6, or internet protocol version six, is designed to succeed IPv4, which has been the publicly used version since 1981.
The successor version was created to meet demand for more web addresses.
But a full-scale switch to IPv6 will not happen any time soon, according to Qing Li, chief scientist and senior technologist at Blue Coat Systems.
"IPv4 and IPv6 are going to coexist for many years, so any organisations will need to support both technologies to ensure that IPv4 users can access IPv6 content and that IPv6 users can access IPv4 content," he remarked.
Mr Li recommended using an application layer gateway to act as a proxy between IPv4 and IPv6 users and content.
"This type of solution creates a seamless environment for users and avoids the complexity of a dual stack or network address translation scenario," he explained.
