BT has announced plans to roll out superfast broadband across the UK in a move that could provide a significant boost to the IT industry.
Bill Murphy, managing director for next generation access at BT, said the company has already started to invest £2.5 billion - the largest capital programme BT has ever embarked on - to deliver broadband to around two-thirds of the country.
He maintained that the roll out is intended to meet the growing need for IT infrastructure in Britain, where some 20 million people use broadband on a daily basis.
"Businesses in particular are looking for higher speed services and also those families who have multiple users who are maybe doing gaming and using broadband for entertainment as well as maybe working from home," Mr Murphy said.
BT estimates that the number of people who rely on broadband internet is growing at a rate of about 20,000 to 25,000 a week.
