Android increases market share

10:37 25th August 2011

Android has continued to increase its market share of the smart phone market, new data reveals.

According to statistics from ABI Research, Android's market share went up to 47 per cent in the second quarter of 2011 - up from 18 per cent during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, Symbian's market share hovered at around 17 per cent in the second quarter this year - a significant drop from the figure of 39 per cent during the same period in 2010.

Michael Morgan, senior analyst for mobile devices at ABI Research, pointed out that Android was picked up as an alternative to the Window Phone because Android software was being given away for free and it was designed to be extensible by many different original equipment manufacturers.

"It was essentially the only viable competitor to iOS," Mr Morgan said. "It gave these other players a chance to come in and put out some new phones that met that new trend that iOS had started - internet focus and apps."

Figures from Gartner also align with ABI Research's data that Gartner has significantly increased its market share of the smart phone market.
