Having completed a course of IT training, professionals might turn their attention to what company they will choose to help further their career.
Many businesses will have in-house technical departments, but others may outsource some or all of their IT functions.
Claudio Da Rold, vice president at Gartner, believes the decision depends on the skills of the particular individual.
Technically minded people who enjoy tasks such as writing code will be best suited to working at an outsourcing company, he told the Times, as their role will be core.
However, those who would prefer IT careers that require other skills - such as people management and liaising with providers - might be better suited to IT jobs at client companies, said Mr Da Rold.
According to Business Link, outsourcing IT functions allows companies to concentrate on what they do best, save money, enjoy greater flexibility and manage their growth.
