What skills are needed for IT service management?

Those considering IT careers might have come across IT service management (ITSM) when perusing the wealth of available options.

These roles - which can include networking jobs expertise - require the holder to be able to analyse the performance of IT systems and are becoming increasingly important to a business' success, Computing reports.

However, moving into the future, individuals in service management may have to marry technical know-how with softer skills, one expert has claimed.

Megan Pendlebury, services management executive at the UK IT Services Management Forum, told the magazine that ITSM may develop to incorporate business functions such as facilities management.

She predicted: "The people who get the jobs will have skills on the fluffy side, such as people skills management, customer management and that type of thing."

Research by KPMG recently found that many in executive IT careers believe that business and IT goals need to work hand in hand - a central tenet of ITSM.
