The Welsh assembly government has begun moves to persuade more schoolgirls that IT jobs could be right for them.
It has partnered with e-skills UK to set up a network of computer clubs aimed at ten to 14-year-old girls across the principality.
UK Computer Clubs 4 Girls from schools in Pembrokeshire and Merthyr Tydfil have already been on visits to BT's data centre in Cardiff Bay to get insights into the workings of video streaming over broadband and next generation networks.
Peter Sishton of e-skills UK said the participation of companies such as BT is vital to efforts to encourage more girls to enter the IT industry when they leave school.
"IT is at the heart of the Welsh economy and a key objective is to make IT careers more attractive for girls," he added.
Mr Sishton's organisation is a not-for-profit group which acts as the Skills Council within the telecoms and IT sectors.
