Internet users would prefer money to be invested in a high-speed fibre-based network than on other solutions.
Independent broadband comparison site ispreview.co.uk surveyed 400 people and asked them how government money could be best spent.
Information taken from respondents revealed 53 per cent said a fibre-optic network is the best choice, 17 per cent favoured fixed wireless or WIFI services, 16.5 per cent want more mobile broadband facilities and 12 per cent said they would like to see money spent on satellite broadband.
ISPreview UK's editor and founder Mark Jackson explained that the results were proof consumers "do not wish to be short-changed by expensive, unreliable (fluctuating speeds) or inflexible 'quick-fix' solutions".
People moving into networking careers could soon notice connections speeds increase thanks to a commitment from the UK government to provide broadband for all, up to 2 Mbps.
Separate research has, however, warned against believing the connection speeds quoted by some providers.
According to regulator Ofcom, some of the cheaper providers are not delivering speeds close to what they advertise.
