The announcement by Corus of further job cuts at its steelworks has prompted unions to raise a petition, which will be taken to Downing Street.
According to the Community union, more than 7,000 people have signed the papers following a weekend of protest, the Yorkshire Post has reported.
"This campaign is really about saving manufacturing jobs in the region and although this petition is about to close, the fight doesn't end here and we will continue to push our case," Steve Stacey, the union's regional director, told the paper.
Mr Stacey likened the treatment of steelworkers to that of the miners and warned that jobs would also be lost in associated industries should the cuts go ahead.
Faced with pit closures, miners were forced to retrain so they could find work. Steelworkers who find themselves in a similar position could look to computing courses to help them learn new skills.
