As the evolution of technology progresses, the role of those in IT careers must follow, one expert has claimed.
Alex Cullen, vice president and research director at Forrester Research, told delegates at the company's annual forum that even at the highest level, IT careers will change as enterprise systems update.
Chief information officers could find themselves moving into one of two distinct roles, he said. Some will take charge of keeping existing systems ticking over, while others will manage change to newer technologies.
"IT is the heart of your business, and you need a general manager to keep it running," he is quoted as saying by Computing.
"But if you only expect IT to 'keep running', you are expecting too little."
Even if roles change, pay packets in IT careers show no sign of shrinking. A recent Celre study quoted in Computer Weekly revealed that salaries in the industry are at a three-year high.
