Tesco techie's IT career began "by accident"

15:28 1st July 2008

He has one of the most high-profile IT careers in retail, but it all could have been very different for Nick Lansley.

The head of Tesco's IT and new technologies division told IT Week that he fell into his IT career "by accident", having initially been enthused by radio.

However, he was exposed to computing while studying for a physics and engineering course - and he never looked back.

"It was like, 'Where have you been all my life?'" he said.

Mr Lansley added that IT courses played a big part in his success. He gained a degree in computing which taught him about the reasons behind programming, rather than just showing him how it is done.

One of Mr Lansley's achievements since joining the supermarket giant was the establishment of Tesco Access - an accessible home shopping website - in collaboration with the Royal National Institute of Blind People.
