Telephone services will increasingly be offered over the internet, an expert commentator has said.
Rupert Wood, principal analyst at Analysys Mason, notes that operators have not yet moved in this direction but could do soon.
Commenting about BT's plans, Mr Wood said the telecoms company is likely to change its mind and offer more Voice Over internet Protocol (VoIP) services.
BT has "seen a different, alternative route to controlling costs on fixed lines and reducing prices and remaining competitive", he explained.
Working in networking careers or for larger companies, employees could find they have to become familiar with Voip calls if their business adopts the technology.
Services will move to Voip in the long run, Mr Wood claims, although this "will take many years to happen".
Voip provider Skype provides free calls through its service, as long as both parties are connected from a computer to the internet.
