The use of social networking sites at work can have real benefits for businesses, an expert has claimed.
According to social media guru and blogger Jason Fells, as long as companies set certain rules they can integrate their workers' surfing habits in ways to help promote their brand.
Mr Fells claims that by establishing certain parameters companies can start "embracing the fact that your employees are interacting with potential customers on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and more".
People moving into programming careers could get involved in the creation of new social networking sites or writing code for the numerous applications found on them.
As well as giving employees a greater sense of pride in their firm, letting them continue a positive conversation about their employer creates an "ad-hoc sales force", says Mr Fells.
Analyst comScore reported that social networking site use by 15-24-year olds increased by 14 per cent in the UK last year.
