Skills shortage 'spells IT career opportunities for women'

17:36 3rd June 2008

Skills shortages in the IT sector might be bad news for employers - but it could be good news for those considering IT careers.

Maggie Berry, director of womenintechnology.co.uk, said that there is a large range of opportunities available for women who are looking to switch to IT careers.

Currently, women are underrepresented in the IT careers sector. Figures from the British Computer Society suggest that at UK universities, less than 30 per cent of academic and research staff in IT and computer science departments are female.

That leaves a lot of room for women to step up to the plate. Ms Berry said: "Technology is an innovative and ever-evolving industry which is exciting to be a part of and allows you to work with cutting edge technology that has a direct impact on the success of a business."
