Retraining adults is good for business

12:00 24th June 2009

Employers are eager to help over-25-year-olds to retrain, according to UTV.

Peter Kingston from the website reported there has been a rise in the number of adult apprenticeships taking place in the UK, proving it is never too late for a career change.

Simon Waugh, chief executive of the National Apprenticeship Service said it had originally planned for 30,000 from the over-25 age group to sign up to its scheme when it was suggested two years ago.

In reality, 60,000 have started on the programme since its launch this year. The scheme requires employers to pay for half the cost of the apprenticeship and the government the other half.

Mr Waugh said: "The changes going on in industry, the moves from more traditional to newer [industries], mean that companies have got to re-skill some people.

He told ePolitix.com one of the reasons the National Apprenticeship Service was launched was to change the image of apprenticeships as an old-fashioned idea.
