Recruitment Society: Fight for a job

09:40 3rd July 2009

An expert has told graduates that they will need to fight for a job, more so than ever before.

Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said: "The more applications you make, ... the more opportunities you identify, [the more you can identify chances to] build your experience, that is what makes the difference."

He recommended that graduates spend time over their job applications and make them stand out.

One way to do this could be to complete a computer course in the relevant job sector.

Mr Huxham added that students will need to broaden their net when looking for jobs - they should look for opportunities in local businesses as well as the big graduate recruiters.

The Office for National Statistics published a report in the middle of June that found the employment rate for people of working age was 73.3 per cent for the first quarter of 2009, down 0.8 per cent from the previous year.
