The economic downturn could be a major factor in workers' decisions to start their own businesses, says one high profile entrepreneur.
Star of the BBC's Dragon's Den James Caan said that as many companies fail to offer adequate security, employees are feeling inspired to make a career change.
He argued recessions create a "pro-risk environment", where staff feel less remorse about leaving their current job.
By contrast, in previous years where the economy is doing well people tended to think about the future less, he added.
Mr Caan has teamed up with science and innovation minister Lord Paul Drayson to encourage the UK's best original thinkers to put themselves forward for a new award.
Launched last month (August 21st), the iawards will promote creativity in business, science and technology.
According to organisers, it is through these sectors the nation is most likely to find a viable economic solution to the recession.
