Businesses continue to find it difficult to fill their IT careers with adequately skilled candidates, the findings of a new poll suggest.

US-based firm Robert Half Technology questioned chief information officers on recruitment issues and found that 77 per cent believe it is equally or more difficult to fill positions at present than it was last year.

Furthermore, 52 per cent of respondents believe the difficult in filling IT careers opportunities is linked to a shortage of qualified candidates.

Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director of Robert Half Technology, said that skills shortages are perceived to exist in areas such as applications development, web development and networking careers.

"Employers are struggling to find the most qualified candidates and some are more willing to negotiate higher compensation to get them on board," she advised.

Another recent survey by the company found that 14 per cent of IT managers in the US plan to recruit IT personnel in the third quarter of this year.
