Over 60 per cent of the working population expect to have two careers or more, according to new research carried out on behalf of the Training and Development Agency (TDA).
A further 25 per cent of those surveyed by ICM expected to have up to four separate career changes, revealing the challenges employers face in retaining skilled workers as the popularity of 'poly-careers' rise.
This news arrives as the government prepares to announce the Transition to Teaching scheme, which aims to encourage top performers from target industries to become teachers and share their skills in science, IT, engineering or maths.
Larry Hirst, chairman of IBM Europe, who has encouraged the scheme said: "An exceptional business will recognise key trends, observe how trends impact on productivity, and take action to ensure that risks are mitigated and benefits are maximised.
"The change in the careers landscape is one such opportunity that businesses need to grasp and take action on, or risk missing out on the business benefits."
The TDA is an executive public body established to raise standards in schools by attracting able and committed people to teaching.
