Open source software needs managing, claims expert

Open source software should be managed the same as other programmes, computer expert Alex Wied has claimed.

Writing for ComputerWorldUK, Mr Wied notes that in an ideal world such software would be provided by online communities and available for free.

People about to embark on an IT career could be interested to note he suggests that when using software of this sort some key requirements need to be established.

Companies should seek robust technical support and user warranties, while looking for indemnification cover and quality certificates.

For firms that are using software there needs to be a "trusted vendor behind each software that secures technical support regardless if proprietary or open source", he advised.

Companies should also try to establish any enterprise-level features and enterprise-compliant licenses that come with open source offerings.

Graduates of computing courses who go on to work for local councils are increasingly likely to find themselves working with this software.

Social networking site Public Sector Forums claims around half of local authorities will have adopted this approach by 2011.ADNFCR-1667-ID-19311366-ADNFCR
