People starting computer courses next year could get their hands on the latest version of Microsoft's Office package and will find the company is taking its tools online.
The software giant has revealed that it will launch Office Web applications and have reduced versions of its best-selling products hosted online.
Users will then be able to a carry out many of their regular IT tasks, without buying the full program.
Business users who have the firm's productivity software and Windows Live account users will have access to the cut down 2010 version.
The full versions will feature image and video processing and new email management functions.
By offering versions of its software for free Microsoft is competing with other open-source programs, such as those provided by search company Google, AbiWord and AjaxWrite.
Many companies see knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word as essential skills and some are happy to push employees onto computing courses to get their skills up to date.
