People in networking careers may find they have more work on their hands in the near future as a new development could allow wireless devices to be connected up more easily.
The Wi-Fi Direct (WD) is a new standard being created by the Wi-Fi Alliance that allows WD enabled devices to create peer-to-peer connections with each other on an ad-hoc basis.
It is hoped the scheme will help boost the way in which people use networks by allowing them to connect wirelessly in a way that is both quick and convenient.
The move could result in an increase in the demand for wireless networking technology and could open up new avenues for people in networking careers to explore.
John Dunne, the editor of Techworld magazine, has warned that the new technology could also create security risks, suggesting more work needs to be done by the IT industry to shore up the defences of the new standard.
"Wi-Fi is a bit of a compromise in terms of security, not because there are ways of securing it, but because it can be quite technically difficult to understand what it's doing when it's making a connection," he explained.
The Wi-Fi Alliance expects to begin certification for its new specification by the middle of next year.
