Thousands of youngsters could be set to benefit from IT training courses as part of ongoing efforts to improve prospects for teens in south Wales.
According to official figures, around ten per cent of all 16-to-18 year olds in Wales could be described as NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training) as of the end of June 2010.
Now, despite economic constraints, the Welsh government has announced the launch of a new £13 million project geared towards boosting the career prospects of under-19s, the BBC has reported.
It is intended that the money, which will come from a pan-European fund, will see youngsters in the south of the country given access to a range of classes, including IT training and specific vocational courses.
Launching the scheme, Alun Davies, deputy minister for European programmes at the Welsh Parliament said: "Equipping young people with new skills and confidence will lead to improved career opportunities and a quality workforce."
Meanwhile, the Welsh government is among the parties behind a new foundation that has pledged to provide £500,000 a year to support new technology research and development projects in the country.
