Those planning networking careers might be interested in a new development being pioneered by Microsoft.
The software giant is testing a new system that will allow users on enterprise networks to communicate via a social networking system.
Called TownSquare, the system is currently being trialled among Microsoft employees.
As with services like Facebook, employees can communicate with each other and update their individual profiles. The system runs alongside the office's intranet system.
One of the main reported work-related benefits is the ability to access information about the documents and tasks completed by colleagues.
As yet, there are no details of a widescale public release.
Meanwhile those in programming careers may have watched Microsoft's latest move in the open source sector with interest.
The company has announced it is to sponsor the Open Source Census.
