Mind: Job uncertainty can cause depression

10:22 9th June 2009

An expert has warned that job insecurity can lead to stress and depression.

Paul Farmer, chief executive of mental health charity Mind, said: "Job insecurity can really put a strain on working relationships and motivation levels."

He added that these factors alone could contribute to increased stress and anxiety levels.

One way that could help ease the pressure may be to retrain with a computer course. This way people may be better prepared to handle a career change if they were to lose their job.

Mr Farmer's comments follow research from Harris Interactive that revealed one third of Britons are finding it difficult to get to sleep more than once per week. An additional two-thirds reported finding it hard to drift off at least once a month.

Money and work worries were cited as the most common cause of preventing a peaceful night's sleep - perhaps unsurprising when the same study found that half of respondents finished off work on their laptop when in bed.
