Ireland has agreed to install a fibre-optic network, which it hopes will attract investment and put the country at the forefront of computing.
The Irish government's development plans will be led by telecoms firm Intune Networks, which will create a new smart network.
The firm will draw on the expertise of its people in networking careers to help create a next-generation communications network.
Minister for communications, energy and natural resources Eamon Ryan explained that the network will demonstrate the country's digital capability and help secure investment.
"With Irish companies like Intune Networks leading in research and innovation, today we are securing the investment and employment of the future," he said.
People retraining and taking up places on network courses will learn about the latest fibre-optic networks and the part they play in speeding up internet connections.
Ireland is not unique in adopting this technology - south and east Africa are now connected to India via an underwater fibre-optic cable.
