The internet must review its basic structure if it is to become more accountable, say experts.
Security specialists Verizon has questioned the effectiveness of the current TCP/IP protocols, which enable data to be sent over the web, Computing.co.uk has reported.
According to Verizon's executive director for national security and cyber policy, Marcus Sachs, the existing setup is "insecure".
"There are fundamental problems in the internet and maybe we need to look at fundamental fixes," he said.
Mr Sachs warned the internet is now 40-years-old and ill-equipped to protect against the type of threats it faces today.
Students on networking courses and those now employed in IT careers may appreciate his calls for an overhaul of the web.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is the internet's regulatory body. It says roughly 50 per cent of the web's top-level registered domains now have improved protection and certainty over their domain names.
